Guns & the Second Amendment (as explained by SNL)

I don't like guns. I don't like that I've lived with people who own guns (because of their jobs), I don't want a gun in my house and I kind of think it's creepy that people want to keep guns in their house. I DEFINITELY think it's creepy when they want to carry them ON them wherever they go.

Recently (well, like 9 months ago) I actually went to a gun range for the first time because I made a promise to a friend. He had convinced me to try it with this line: "Nothing scares Conservative Republicans more than a liberal atheist that knows how to use a gun." And I will NOT deny that it was fun. In A COMPLETELY SAFE AND CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. This place was STRICT. You always had an instructor next to you, YOU were not allowed to load the gun and if you even turned slightly away from the firing direction, you would be stopped and reprimanded (here I am with a rifle with my instructor). In those conditions, I can't help but admit I had a BLAST (pun intended)! :-)

But the personal ownership of guns...I don't know. It's just creepy. Granted, it MAY come in handy in self-defense (although, at least in NYC, I believe you have to keep it locked up so that could hinder it's actual use), but there's too much risk of unintentional damage. You always hear about people accidentally shooting themselves or family members. And I actually went to collage with a kid who's friend accidentally shot and killed him. It's terrible. And personally, while I supposed I'd rather kill or be killed...well, I REALLY don't want to kill anyone.

Anyway, I think guns are a little too easy to come by in this country. Though, I'm not sure how to fix it because the criminal always seem to find ways to get illegal things...but I feel like being able to buy guns in a Walmart or something, with like a week's wait or whatever, is just not enough. And why do people need to own them so badly!? And so MANY! One of my favourite comedians, Eddie Izzard, makes a joke about kids only having to go to their "grandfather's arsenal" to get ahold of guns. There's that like 6-year-old kid in Bowling for Columbine that Michael Moore talks about who takes someone's gun to school and kills a little girl. There should have been NO WAY for that kid to get his hands on a gun!!!! But people teach their kids to shoot guns from very young ages! And I suppose it's good for them to at least KNOW how to handle it, but...I don't know, I feel like their not old enough to REALLY understand the consequences yet.

Maybe it's because of where I live that I don't want a gun? I recall being in a London hostel back in (I think) 2004 where this older gentleman was (co-ed room hostel) was staying for a night or two to look at some artifact or something (the hostel is right by the British Museum). He was from Texas and somehow we ended up talking about guns (weird...) but when I said I would NOT want a gun EVER, he was surprised. He said he thought we all wanted guns up here but out government wouldn't let us! I said I didn't know that many people that actually wanted to own a gun (and even the ones that did, wanted them for recreational purposes, not for protection). He didn't understand, he asked about protecting ourselves or our property and I said that's what the police were for. He said the police would take a half an hour to get to his home by him. Which I suppose, if that were the case, I might want my own protection as well. I don't know.

Anyway, this all comes up because of what I thought was a great and funny little bit on SNL's Weekend Update last Saturday.

Well, anyway, I don't really know what's to be done about this. I think a lot of it might be because of something like what I was talking about with that Texan. I think our country is just so damn large that the experiences I can have are so completely different some someone in, say, Texas. It DOES seem to be more of the southern states that are so pro-gun, but that might not be true and just my perception.

What do YOU think of the gun situation in our country?

The End.

PS Here's the Eddie Izzard bit that I love!

PPS One last thing, one of my favourite Eminem lines is from the song "Who Knew": "So who's bringing the guns in this country? I couldn't sneak a plastic pellet gun through customs over in London."

Break for Funny Political Video

Don't Ask Don't Tell is a huge pile of bullshit. Just another way to suppress the rights of people that OTHER people find "icky." I cannot believe this still exists. (You suck, McCain.) But then again, I can't believe there are actually laws that prevent gay people from getting married. Seriously?! Do you listen to yourselves?! You think it's OK to actually tell other people they do NOT deserve the same rights as you do!? That is UNBELIEVABLE. That is so far beyond arrogance. It'd be FUNNY if it wasn't so damaging. ARRRGHHH!

Anyway, funnyordie.com (love that site) has a great video up about this very issue! Watch and enjoy!

And while you're at it, check out Louis CK's comments on the gays...

Love that guy.

Some REALLY SMART Palin Supporters (That's Sarcasm)

I know this isn't ALL the Palin supporters out there, but it's still pretty funny. How can you be SO supportive of a political person to stand in line for hours waiting to meet her if you know practically NOTHING about her policies. Its so sad how easily people are brainwashed!

The End.

PS Didn't think I'd be using that Palin tag again after the election. Ugh.

AAAAAAH!!!! INFURIATING!!!

Found on The New Atheist:

This makes me so frakkin' angry!!!! Firstly, the kids' songs are harmless. It's not like they're droning on about the light that shines from Obama's face or anything. One of 'em just says "Hooray" for his accomplishments or something and talks about how all "colors" of people are equal. OK, so that guy shouting about Obama saving the world is a bit much... But really?? We're the best country because we respect "God's authority"?! NO other country does this?! What about Israel? I can't imagine a country that prays more to god and follows religious rules, etc. Their country is torn to shit. And anyway, I don't really think we're the best anymore. (Not sure if I ever did, I don't know everything there is to know about all other countries to be able to make that call.) But certainly we're not the greatest place to live right now. And it started BEFORE Obama. (Cuz I'm sure that's what this asshole would say to that.)

Man, I've only seen snippets of the shit that spews from this guy's mouth, mostly just repeated clips of him calling Obama a racist. Yeah. Genius. I think this is the longest I've watched him and I think about the limit of what I can take.

Just frakkin' horrendous.

A VOID! We have a VOID to fill because we don't believe in god!! AAAHHH!! This shit drives me CRAZY! How the hell can someone assume that shit about other people! And the stuff he says we fill it with? Are you says people who believe in god don't want or say those things? Arrrggh!!!

I have to stop now. Blech!

Argh! Christian Fundamentalists Are Terrifying!

Was led to this by another blog that I follow. Holy balls, this shit is crazy!

Pray Obama Fails

My "favourite" line: "I want Obama to fail because his agenda is 100 percent at odds with God's. Pretending it is not simply makes a mockery of God's straightforward Commandments."

Keep your religion out of my government!!!!!!!

How Depressing Is This? Thanks Again, America!

I'll never understand people's fear of homosexuality. It doesn't affect you if you're not gay. Let these people frakkin' BE!

Here's the body, if you're too lazy to click. ;-) haha

US balks at backing condemnation of anti-gay laws

UNITED NATIONS – Alone among major Western nations, the United States has refused to sign a declaration presented Thursday at the United Nations calling for worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality.

In all, 66 of the U.N.'s 192 member countries signed the nonbinding declaration — which backers called a historic step to push the General Assembly to deal more forthrightly with any-gay discrimination. More than 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality, and in several of them homosexual acts can be punished by execution.

Co-sponsored by France and the Netherlands, the declaration was signed by all 27 European Union members, as well as Japan, Australia, Mexico and three dozen other countries. There was broad opposition from Muslim nations, and the United States refused to sign, indicating that some parts of the declaration raised legal questions that needed further review.

"It's disappointing," said Rama Yade, France's human rights minister, of the U.S. position — which she described as in contradiction with America's long tradition as a defender of human rights.

According to some of the declaration's backers, U.S. officials expressed concern in private talks that some parts of the declaration might be problematic in committing the federal government on matters that fall under state jurisdiction. In numerous states, landlords and private employers are allowed to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation; on the federal level, gays are not allowed to serve openly in the military.

Carolyn Vadino, a spokeswoman for the U.S. mission to the U.N., stressed that the United States — despite its unwillingness to sign — condemned any human rights violations related to sexual orientation.

Gay rights activists nonetheless were angered by the U.S. position.

"It's an appalling stance — to not join with other countries that are standing up and calling for decriminalization of homosexuality," said Paula Ettelbrick, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission.

She expressed hope that the U.S. position might change after President-elect Barack Obama takes office in January.

Also denouncing the U.S. stance was Richard Grenell, who until two months ago had been the chief spokesman for the U.S. mission to the U.N.

"It is ridiculous to suggest that there are legal reasons why we can't support this resolution — common sense says we should be the leader in making sure other governments are granting more freedoms for their people, not less," said Grenell, who described himself as a gay Republican. "The U.S. lack of support on this issue only dims our once bright beacon of hope and freedom for those who are persecuted and oppressed."

More than 50 countries opposed to the declaration, including members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, issued a joint statement Thursday criticizing the initiative as an unwarranted attempt to give special prominence to gays and lesbians. The statement suggested that protecting sexual orientation could lead to "the social normalization and possibly the legalization of deplorable acts" such as pedophilia and incest.

The declaration also has been opposed by the Vatican, a stance which prompted a protest in Rome earlier this month.

A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Roman Catholic Church opposed the death penalty and other harsh repression of gays and lesbians, but he expressed concern that the declaration would be used as pressure against those who believe marriage rights should not be extended to gays.

A new Vatican statement, issued Thursday, endorsed the call to end criminal penalties against gays, but said that overall the declaration "gives rise to uncertainty in the law and challenges existing human norms."

The European nations backing the declaration waged their campaign in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Dutch foreign affairs minister, Maxime Verhagen, said countries that endorsed that 1948 document had no right to carve out exceptions based on religion or culture that allowed discrimination against gays.

"Human rights apply to all people in all places at all times," he said. "I will not accept any excuse."

He acknowledged that the new declaration had only symbolic import, but said it marked the first time such a large number of nations had raised the cause of gay rights in the context of General Assembly proceedings.

"This statement aims to make debate commonplace," he said. "It is not meant to be a source of division, but to eliminate the taboo that surrounds the issue."

Although the declaration's backers were pleased that nations on six continents had signed it, there were only two from Asia and four from Africa.

I don't expect everything to be fixed immediately, but I actually have hope and a good feeling he will be able to get us on the right track! I can't wait to travel abroad now and not be embarrassed about where I come from... ;-)

Thank you to everyone who voted for Obama. You made the right choice. :)

Very Relevant Quote

"We will destroy from within what we are trying to protect from without."
— Dwight Eisenhower

Ok, so I got it from The Daily Show guest Eugene Jarecki (whose book I now want to read, The American Way of War), but still. Awesome and very fitting. I wish our government would pay attention to smart people. ::sigh::

Anyway, not to be too serious, here's an AMAZING clip of Jason Jones talking to the folks over in Wasilla where our dear Sarah Palin seems to think the best people are made. This is actually the second time The Daily Show has had a segment in Wasilla. While they're both hilarious (and scary), I like this one better because he tries to find out what the mayor of Wasilla is actually responsible for and how that prepares someone to be the Vice President of the United States...

Vote NO in Palin PBS Poll

Just take a second. It may seem silly, but any little bit to help influence people to NOT vote McCain/Palin is worth it. And this really is easy. PBS has an online poll posted asking if Sarah Palin is qualified. Apparently the Republicans knew about this in advance and are flooding the voting with YES votes. It's only a poll, but it will be reported on PBS, picked up by mainstream media, and can influence undecided voters in swing states. Please do two things -- takes 20 seconds. Click on link and vote yourself.

Here's the link: http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html

Then send this to every single Obama-Biden voter you know, and urge
them to vote and pass it on. The last thing we need is PBS having to say our viewers think Sarah/ Palin is qualified.

As a reward, watch this funny Palin clip!! I always loved David Letterman!!!

Tonight's The Daily Show

Real quick. Too funny to not post about. The Daily Show tonight had a segment where they taped a bunch of old Jewish Floridians watching the presidential debate and their reactions. The segment ended with this most hilarious bit:

Old Woman: She's a big horse, isn't she? I shouldn't say that. Thats's...nothing against her.
Old Man: Who?
Old Woman: Michelle. She'...uh...
Old Man: She's got a big tuchas.
Old Woman: She's a big horse, I said.
Old Man: Yeah. A lot of black women have big tuchas.
Old Woman: Not all of them. They have to come from a certain tribe.

Hahahahahaha Old people. Funny, but scary... :-P

(Also, this segment was hosted by my new favourite correspondent, Wyatt Cenac!!)
